Chalkbeat Philadelphia — In 2020, John Brown transitioned into teaching African American Studies at Freire Schools during a time of significant social unrest and the pandemic. With a background in coaching and ministry, he embraced the challenge of educating students on racism and antiracism. Brown participated in a year-long Equity-Driven Leadership training, which helped him develop an antiracist curriculum that encouraged students to explore their identities and challenge stereotypes. Despite the challenges, he found teaching a rewarding calling, empowering students with an understanding of their history and potential to influence the future.
